MUNCIE, Ind. - Despite shooting the fourth-lowest team score of the day, the University of Akron men's golf team improved one spot to finish the 2005 Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational in eighth place Tuesday afternoon at the par 70, 6,483-yard Delaware Country Club in Muncie, Indiana.
The Zips carded a final-round 3-over 283 to end the event at 21-over-par 861. Mid-American Conference foe and tournament-host Ball State won the event behind a final-round 9-under 271 to finish at 16-under 824. For the first time since the Fall 1997 season, the Zips have posted three-consecutive top-10 team finishes to open a season.
"We had two guys struggle in round one and that put us back so far in the pack that we could not play ourselves out of that hole," head coach Donnie Darr "This was just not our week and this golf course just did not suit us, but we competed well the final two rounds to continue to build and prepare for Georgetown."
Colin Clemente (Hubbard, Ohio-Warren JFK HS) posted his first top-20 finish of the season and the best round of the tournament for the Zips, firing a bogey-free round of 2-under 68, the best round of his career. Clemente finished tied for 13th place at 1-over 211.
Brad Wright (Cambridge, Ohio-Cambridge HS) ended day two alone in 18th place with a three-round total of 2-over 212. Wright was at 2-under through 15 holes before dropping four strokes in the final three holes to end the round at 2-over 72.
"Colin was hurt last week and all he did was chip and putt
during practice and that paid off for him this week," Darr said.
"Brad was in the running for a top-10 finish late in the round, but
had two bad holes, but has now finished in the top-20 for the
second week."

Vaughn Snyder (Massillon, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) posted a 7-over 77 on the final day to finish in a four-way tie for 48th place at 14-over 224
Sean Dove (Bulger, Pa.-Burgettstown) fired his second-consecutive round of 4-over 74 to end this year's event alone in 69th place.
Akron will take 18 days off from competitive action before travelling to Leesburg, Va., for the Georgetown Hoya Invitational, which is slated for October 22-23.
