Akron Golf Ends Fall Season With Fifth-Place Showing

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. - Sophomore Ryan Gutowski (Copley, Ohio-Copley HS) posted his second-career round in the 60's and his first-career top-five finish as the University of Akron men's golf team wrapped up the fall season with a fifth-place showing Sunday at the Big East/MAC Challenge at the par-72, 7,370-yard Orange County National Golf Center in Winter Garden, Fla.
Akron fired a final-round 5-over 293 to wrap up the tournament with a 9-over-par 873, finishing three shots behind Mid-American Conference opponent Northern Illinois (870) and seven shots behind Ohio (866). Tournament-host Marquette won the inaugural event with a three-round score of 12-under 852, winning by 11 strokes over South Florida (863).
The Zips posted their fifth top-10 finish in five events this season, a mark equalled to that of the Spring 2003 season when the squad posted five-straight top-10 finishes. That streak was later continued to seven-straight in the Fall 2003 season.
Gutowski, following a career-best round of 4-under 68 to open the tournament, posted his second round under 70 in as many days. He posted a score of 3-under 69 to finish in a six-way tie for third place at 5-under 211.
Brad Wright (Cambridge, Ohio-Cambridge HS) posted his fourth
top-20 finish in five events following a final-round 6-over 78. He
finished tied for 20th place at 5-over 221. Vaughn Snyder
(Massillon, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) concluded the fall season
with a closing round of 2-over 74 to move into a tie for 27th place
at 7-over 223.

Ryan Culbertson (Wooster, Ohio-Wooster) and Colin Clemente (Hubbard, Ohio-Warren JFK HS), who started the day together in a tie for 27th place, finished the tournament with identical rounds of 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for 32nd place at 8-over 224.
The Zips will be out of action until March 18-19, 2006, when they travel to Citrus Springs, Fla., and the El Diablo Golf and Country Club for the El Diablo Intercollegiate.
