Zips Finish First Tournament In Sixth Place

CHARDON, Ohio - In his collegiate golf debut, freshman Vaughn Snyder (Massillon, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic HS) earned a top-10 finish as the University of Akron men's golf team finished posted a sixth-place finish at the 2005 Cleveland State Invitational at the par 71, 7,080 yard Sand Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday.
Snyder fired a 1-over 72 during the final round, including three birdies and four bogeys, to finish at 2-over-par 215, a mere two shots out of third place. The Zips finished the invitational with a team-score of 28-over-par 880 after carding a 11-over 285 on day two.
Sean Dove (Bulger, Pa.-Burgettstown) equalled Snyder's 1-over 72 during the final round to improve 12 spots to finish tied for 30th place. He finished the tournament with a 9-over 222. Ryan Gutowski (Copley, Ohio-Copley HS) and Colin Clemente (Hubbard, Ohio-Warren JFK HS), who started the day tied for 28th place, carded identical rounds of 7-over 78 to end the day with a three-round total of 12-over 225.
Brad Wright (Cambridge, Ohio-Cambridge HS) and Ryan Culbertson (Wooster, Ohio-Wooster) finished the day tied for 50th place with a score of 14-over 227. Wright carded a final round of 2-over 73 while Culbertson, playing as an individual, carded a 6-over 77.
The Zips return to action September 23-24 when they travel to
Plainview, N.Y., to compete in The McLaughlin golf tournament.
