PLAINVIEW, N.Y. - Ryan Culbertson (Wooster, Ohio-Wooster), Brad Wright (Cambridge, Ohio-Cambridge HS), Vaughn Snyder (Massillon, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) and Sean Dove (Bulger, Pa.-Burgettstown) all finished in the top-20 as the University of Akron men's golf team finished in fourth place at The McLaughlin on Saturday at the par 70, 7,014-yard The Red at Bethpage Golf Course.
Winthrop and tournament-host St. John's tied for top honors after carding three-round totals of 7-over 847. The Zips finished the day with a tournament score of 10-over 850 after carding a final round of 11-over-par 291. Three UA golfers posted at least one round in the 60's, including Culbertson (2), Wright (1) and Dove (1).
"We were really close all tournament and we thought we had a chance," head coach Donnie Darr said. "We were able to play in the last group for the first time in a long time and that is great experience. This is a really big step for our program and we are moving in the right direction."
Culbertson paced the Zips with the best performance of his career, firing a final-round 4-over 74 to finish tied for fourth with a three-round tally of 1-under 209. On Friday, he carded a round of 69 before bettering it with a career-best round of 4-under 66.
"Anytime you can post a sixth and fourth place finish in
back-to-back weeks and are in position to win, you have to be happy
with those results," Darr said. "Winning is an art form and if we
continue to play like this, we will be able to perfect that art
form."

Ryan Gutowski (Copley, Ohio-Copley HS) struggled on the final day, carding a round of 8-over 78 to finish in 59th place at 17-over 227.
Akron returns to action October 3-4 when they travel to Muncie, Indiana, for the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational hosted by Mid-American Conference foe Ball State.
