Tennis Continues Successful Fall At IPFW Invite

- The University of Akron women's tennis team continued its
successful fall season at the IPFW Mastodon Invitational on Friday
and Saturday.
The event was not team scored, and consisted of six flights of
singles and three doubles brackets.
Highlighting the Zips play in Saturday's singles competition was
Laura Hemlepp and Lindsey Berry. Hemlepp dropped the championship
of flight 5 in three sets, while Berry won the consolation final of
flight 3.
Hemlepp defeated IUPUI's Vanessa Carna 6-1, 6-0, then got the best
of Detroit's Kelly Davis 6-0, 6-3, before falling to Xavier's Annie
Diedalis 6-0, 4-6, 10-5 in the title match.
Berry scored a default win in the consolation final of her flight,
after topping IUPUI's Andrea Burkhardt 6-4, 6-7 (9), 10-3. Berry
lost her opening round match to Xavier's Jeannette Feider 4-6, 7-6
(4), 10-8.
Friday's doubles play saw the UA pair of Tanya Gombera and Amy
Sherlock post a victory in the consolation final of flight 1. The
pair caught IUPUI duo Jessica Petersson and Allison Thompson 9-8
(6).
Akron will send a select group of athletes to the ITA Midwest
regional, which gets underway on Oct. 19 on the Michigan State
campus in East Lansing, Mich.
