AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron tennis team lost 4-3 to Ball State on Friday in a Mid-American Conference match at LaTuchie Tennis Center.
After losing the doubles point Akron (5-14, 1-6 MAC) rallied in singles play, scoring points at Nos. 2 and 5-6. The deciding point of the day came at the No. 3 slot where UA's Amy Sherlock (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada/Sacred Heart HS) lost a closely contested match to Haly Calderwood, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4).
UA's win at No. 2 came courtesy of Jenna Larson (Bismarck, N.D./Century HS), who defeated Jennifer Pollack 6-0, 2-6, 7-5. The Zips' point at No. 5 also came in a three-set fashion, with Lindsey Berry (Dayton, Ohio/Northmont HS) besting Emma Retter 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Play at No. 6 needed a third-set super-tiebreaker to decide a winner, with UA's Jennifer Ales (Spring Hill, Fla./Pasco-Hernando CC) catching Rachel Lemar 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 at that position.
Ball State (9-10, 3-4) took the Nos. 1 and 4 singles matches in straight sets.
Akron returns to the court on Saturday, playing host to Miami (Ohio) in the regular-season finale. The match is schedule for 1 p.m. EDT at Hyre Park, however, inclement weather has been forecast for the area and could result in play being moved indoors to LaTuchie Tennis Center. A venue adjustment would also change the match time to 3 p.m.
