AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron tennis team closed out its regular season on Saturday with a 7-0 loss at the hands of Miami (Ohio) in a Mid-American Conference match at Hyre Park.
Miami (11-9, 6-2 MAC) went through the Akron (5-15, 1-7) doubles lineup with ease, allowing just six points across the three matches.
The RedHawks carried their momentum into singles play, winning at all six positions in straight sets. The points of most resistance for the Zips came at Nos. 2 and 3. UA's Jenna Larson (Bismarck, N.D./Century HS) fell 7-5, 6-4 to Leda Pesatova at No. 2, while the Zips' Amy Sherlock (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada/Sacred Heart HS) lost 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 to Linda Jirouskova.
Saturday was Senior Day for the Zips, who honored Jennifer Ales (Spring Hill, Fla./Pasco-Hernando CC) before competition began.
Akron will now prepare for next week's MAC Championship, which will be held in Oxford, Ohio, on the Miami campus. The No. 8 seed Zips will face off against No. 9 Northern Illinois in the event's first round at noon EDT on Thursday. Coincidentally, UA's lone conference win this season came against the Huskies on April 14 in DeKalb, Ill.
Western Michigan clinched the tourney's No. 1 seed, while Buffalo earned the No. 2 seed and Miami No. 3. The No. 4 seed will be the winner of Sunday's Eastern Michigan vs. Toledo match, with the loser tying up the No. 5 seed. Ball State is the No. 6 seed, followed by No. 7 Bowling Green, then Akron and Northern Illinois.
