Tony Fox Resigns As Head Tennis Coach
May 03 | Women's Tennis
AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron head women's tennis coach Tony Fox has resigned his position, effective immediately, UA Director of Athletics Mack Rhoades announced on Wednesday.
"I want to thank Tony for his seven years of service to the University and dedication to our women's tennis program," Rhoades said. "We wish him the very best."
Fox closed out his seventh season at Akron last week when the Zips were eliminated in the first round of the Mid-American Conference Championship by Northern Illinois. The Zips, who were seeded eighth in the conference tournament, posted a 5-16 overall record and went 1-7 against league opponents in 2005-06.
Fox compiled a 36-105 (4-58 MAC) record during his UA tenure, but his student-athletes routinely received academic awards on both the conference and national level.
In his time at the University his teams earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Academic Team award in 1998, 1999 and 2000. In the spring of 2002, senior Arianna Rojas-Serpa was named to the ITA's list of scholar athletes, and in 2004 junior Courtney Brenkus and freshman Jenna Larson earned the same distinction.
The Zips also had an athlete named to the All-MAC team for the
third-consecutive season in 2003-04, with senior Irina Strembitsky
getting her second-consecutive first-team nod. Last week, freshman
Tanya Gombera won the MAC's Leann Grimes Sportsmanship Award.
A national search for Fox's replacement will begin
immediately.
