Zips In Eighth After Round One Of MAC Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Ryan Gutowski (Fairlawn, Ohio-Copley) and Vaughn Snyder (Massillon, Ohio-Canton Central Catholic) finished in the top-10 as the University of Akron men's golf team sits in eighth place after the first round of the 2006 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship at the par-72, 6,994-yard Brickyard Crossing Golf Course.
Seven strokes separate the top-eight teams as Kent State finished the first 18 holes with the lead at 2-under 286. Northern Illinois carded an even-par 288 and Miami (Ohio) posted a 1-over 289 to round out the top-three. Akron finished the morning round with a 5-over 293.
Gutowski ended round one just one shot out of the lead after posting a 2-under 70 and tied for thrid place. Gutowski opened up strong with four birdies in the first nine holes before closing the round 2-over on the Final nine holes. Snyder's 1-under 71 was highlighted by his eagle on No. 15 and just two bogeys.
Colin Clemente (Hubbard, Ohio-Warren JFK) entered the clubhouse tied for 28th place at 3-over 75 after carding four birdies, three bogeys and two double-bogeys. Ryan Culbertson (Wooster, Ohio-Wooster) completed his opening round in a 40th-place tie at 5-over 77 while Brad Wright (Cambridge, Ohio-Cambridge) rounded out the squad in 45th place at 10-over 82.
