Tennis Opens Season at BGSU Invite

- The University of Akron tennis team opened its fall schedule
with an impressive showing in day one of the Bowling Green
Invitational on Saturday at Keefe Courts. No team scores are being
kept in the two-day, eight-team invite.
Five Akron players advanced to the semifinals of their respective
flights. Jenna Larson (Bismarck, N.D./Century HS)
defeated Cleveland State's Denisa Muntean 6-4, 6-1 in the opening
round of flight 2 singles, but fell 6-2, 6-1 to Toledo's Martina
Wodzinski in the semis.
In flight 3 singles, Kerry Langworthy (Harare,
Zimbabwe/Gateway HS) advanced with a first-round win over Megan
Gray, but was stopped up in the semis by UIC's Grace Gill-Morlis
6-2, 6-3.
Lindsey Berry (Dayton, Ohio/Northmont HS) made it
to the semis of flight 4 singles, and is scheduled to face Toledo's
Jenny Belsky in the semis. Berry caught Dayton's Carrie Trigilio
7-5, 6-3 in the opening round.
Alyssa Carlson (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran
HS) had a 6-4, 6-4 win over Youngstown State's Irena Lanc in flight
6 singles play, then lost to Xavier's Annie Diedalis 6-0, 6-1 in
the next round.
Laura Hemlepp (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson
HS) downed Xavier's Juranska Kavecensja 6-0, 6-2, but was bested by
Bowling Green's Samantha Kintzel 6-2, 6-1.
In flight 2 doubles, the Zips pair of Amy Sherlock
(Halifax, Nova Scotis/Sacred Heart HS) and Larson scored an 8-2
first-round victory over Cleveland State's Kristin Chamberlain and
Charlotte Gibbons, and will meet up with Xavier's Jackie Vilines
and Alicia Papa in the semifinal.
Play continues on Sunday, and is scheduled to get underway at 9
a.m. EDT.
