Tennis Wraps Up Play At BGSU Invite

- Two University of Akron tennis players earned third-place
finishes in their respective singles flights on Sunday in the final
day of the Bowling Green Invitational at Keefe Courts. Team scores
were not kept in the two-day, eight-team event.
Taking home third-place honors for the Zips were Jenna
Larson (Bismarck, N.D./Century HS), in flight 2, and
Alyssa Carlson (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran
HS) in flight 6. Larson defeated YSU's Allison Day 6-4, 6-1, while
Carlson got the best of Cleveland State's Kristin Chamberlain 6-4,
6-4.
Three other UA athletes lost their third-place singles matches.
With the score 4-2 in the first set of flight 3, Kerry
Langworthy (Harare, Zimbabwe/Gateway HS) retired to
Bowling Green's Kelsey Jakupin. Lindsey Berry
(Dayton, Ohio/Northmont HS) dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to BGSU's
Andrea Volle in flight 4, and Xavier's Alicia Papa got the best of
Laura Hemlepp (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard HS) in
flight 7, 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles action, the UA pair of Amy Sherlock
(Halifax, Nova Scotia/Sacred Heart HS) and Larson lost in the
third-place match of flight 2 to BGSU's Katia Babina and Jakupin
8-2, while two other Zips duos - Tanya Gombera
(Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) and Langworthy, and
Hemlepp and Berry - lost the back draw consolation match in flight
1 and flight 3, respectively.
The Zips continue their fall schedule next month, traveling to the
Mastodon Invitational on the campus of IPFW on Oct. 13-14.
