Zips Win the McLaughlin Tournament

Farmingdale, N.Y. - Blake Sattler (New
Philadelphia,Ohio/New Philadelphia HS) took medalist honors, and Brad
Wright (Cambridge, Ohio/Cambridge HS) finished in second to
lead the University of Akron men's golf team to a first-place
finish at the McLaughlin Tournament this weekend. The win marked
only the second tournament victory for the Zips since 1997. Akron
last took top honors on April 1, 2006 at the Bradford
Intercollegiate, but had not won a event prior to that since
finishing first at the Persimmon Ridger Intercollegiate on Oct. 21,
1997.
The Zips carded in 835 (273-286-276) strokes, earning first-year
head coach Tom Porten his first
tournament victory at Akron. Sattler won the event after finishing
six under par on the weekend with 204 (65-71-68) strokes.
Wright finished just two strokes back of Sattler with a mark of 206
(67-72-67) and posted a team-best round of 67 on the day to end
tied for second-place. Junior
Ryan Gutowski (Copley, Ohio
/Copley HS) rounded out the Zips trio in the top-10 as he ended the
weekend with 211(71-70-71) swings.
Ryan Culbertson (Wooster,
Ohio /Wooster HS) posted a one-over par-71 on Saturday to go along
with an opening-round 70 and a second-round 73 to end the event
tied for 17th place.
Vaughn Snyder (Massillon,
Ohio /Canton Central Catholic HS) rounded out the Zips scorecard
with 217 (71-73-73) strokes to end tied for 28th place.
UA, who held off the remaining 15 teams in the field at the 6,602
yard Bethpage Red Course, will return to the links on Monday, Oct.
2, at the Xavier Invitational.
