Tennis Closes Spartan Invite With Doubles Sweep

EAST LANSING, Mich. A sweep of three doubles matches against Cincinnati highlighted the University of Akron tennis team's play on Sunday in the final day of the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State. The event was not team scored.
The UA pair of Tanyaradzwa Gombera (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior HS) and Carolina Castro Cota (Bogota, Colombia/Ervid Integral HS) notched an 8-4 win over UC's Paradis and Dandik at No. 1, while Alyssa Carlson (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran HS) and Kerry Langworthy (Harare, Zimbabwe/Gateway HS) topped Young and Keiner 9-7 at No. 2, and Lindsey Berry ( Dayton, Ohio/Northmont HS) and Jeremie Benjamin (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) won 8-4 at No. 3 versus Raddin and Rowen to complete the sweep.
Earlier, the Zips were swept in four flights of doubles competition by event host Michigan State, after opening the day by posted four victories against Detroit in singles play.
Against Detroit, Amy Sherlock (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada/Sacred Heart HS) defeated Flankova 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2, Carlson defeated Davis 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6, Benjamin downed Inman 6-1, 6-3 at No. 7, and Laura Hemlepp ( Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson HS) topped Hill 6-3, 6-3 at No. 8. Gombera suffered a three-set loss 3-6, 6-3, 10-2 at No. 1 to Moore.
The Zips will travel to Cincinnati next weekend (Oct. 5-7) to compete in the Queen City Invitational to be hosted by the University of Cincinnati.
