Gombera Hits Milestone At Toledo Invitational

TOLEDO, Ohio Junior Tanyaradzwa Gombera notched the 50th win of her collegiate career on Saturday as the University of Akron tennis team competed in the first day of the Toledo Invitational at the Varsity Tennis Courts on the University of Toledo campus. The event is not team scored, and along with UA and Toledo the field consists of Eastern Illinois, Valparaiso and Youngstown State.
Gombera's win came as part of an Akron sweep of doubles over Valparaiso. The Zips pairs of Amy Sherlock and Carolina Castro Cota won 8-5 at No. 1 over Molly Keifer and Jenny Schwartz, while Lindsey Berry and Jeremie Benjamin won 8-1 at No. 2 versus Lindsay Gustafson and Julie Wingstrom, and Gombera teamed with Alyssa Carlson for an 8-0 win at the No. 3 spot against Lauren Kloofstra and Jackie O'Reilly.
Gombera also posted a hard-fought win at No. 1 singles over Youngstown State's Emily Thayer. Gombera was victorious 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3) after trailing in each set 5-4 and rallying to win.
In other singles play, Castro Cota won both her matches in third set super tiebreakers. The first was a 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 win over Youngstown State's Tanisha Welch at No. 3, and her second was a 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 win over Hayley Homburg of Eastern Illinois at No. 3. Benjamin also posted a singles win, advancing to the semifinals of the Rocket Draw with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Camile Burden of Valparaiso.
The Toledo Invitational continues at 8:30 a.m. EDT on Sunday.
