Tennis Goes 13-3 In Final Day Of Toledo Invite

TOLEDO, Ohio The University of Akron tennis team posted a 4-2 record in doubles play and went 9-1 in singles competition in the final day of the Toledo Invitational being held at the Varsity Tennis Courts at the University of Toledo. The event was not team scored.
Akron opened the day with doubles play and topped Youngstown State in two of three matches. UA's Jeremie Benjamin and Lindsey Berry disposed of Welch and Culbertson 8-4, while Tanyaradzwa Gombera and Alyssa Carlson won 8-3 over Lanc and Patten. The Zips Amy Sherlock and Carolina Castro Cota fell 8-3 versus Thayer and Volkova.
The Zips also claimed two of three doubles contests versus
Eastern Illinois. Sherlock and Castro Cota were 8-5 victors against
Sasidharan and Huck, while Gombera and Carlson kept their streak
alive with an 8-2 win over Hamazy and Lininger. With their two
wins, Gombera and Carlson were co-champions of flight 3
doubles.
In singles play, UA swept all six matches against Valparaiso, and Benjamin defeated Eastern Illinois' Lininger 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals of the Rocket singles bracket. She lost 6-4, 7-5 in the final against Toledo's Azoulay.
In singles consolation play, Laura Hemlepp posted a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Akron will send a select group of athletes to next week's ITA
Midwest Regional in Ann Arbor, Mich. The event runs Oct. 18-23.
