Zips Take Home First Title of the Year
October 16 | Men's Golf
Nashville, Tenn.-The men's golf team and first
year head coach, Nick Goetze, claimed their first tournament
victory of the year today as they took home the title in the
Belmont Fall Shootout.
Despite the overnight rains, which softened the 7,043-yard, par-72
course, the Zips finished out the tournament with a three round
total of 871 (291-285-295) strokes, 7-over par.
"The slick greens continued to cause us some trouble, but we stayed
patient and held it together," said coach Goetze. "I'm proud of the
guys. We've had our chances this fall and it's a great feeling to
get our first victory."
Senior Colin Clemente was 4-over 76 in round three but
still managed to place first for the team shooting 216 (71-69-76)
over 54-holes. He ended the tournament tied for fifth place.
"Even though Colin was off his game in today's round, he still
ended up with another good performance overall," said coach
Goetze.
Sophomore Jacob Patte stepped up and carded rounds of
73-70-74 (217) to end tied for seventh. Shooting 219 (72-75-72)
total strokes was junior Vaughn Snyder who took third for Akron and
13th overall. Senior Ryan Gutowski wasn't far behind Snyder who
tied for 16th place. He ended the two-day tournament respectively
shooting a 220 (76-71-73).
"Vaughn, Jake and Ryan are starting to play with more confidence
and I think their solid finishes will help them forget last week's
Brickyard Collegiate," said Coach Goetze.
Freshman Drew Davidson, who has played in all five
tournaments this fall, concluded the Belmont Fall Shootout with 228
(75-76-77) total strokes.
"Drew has had a tough time with his ball striking in the last two
events, but a few adjustments should get him back to shooting the
low scores he has produced in September," said Coach Goetze.
There were 11 other teams who participated in the Belmont Shootout.
They included: Cleveland State, Florida Gulf Coast, Northern
Illinois, Miami (OH), Campbell, Ball State, Troy, Austin Peay,
William and Mary, Marshall and tournament host Belmont
University.
The Zips return to action Oct. 27th when they head to their last
tournament of the fall in Orlando, Fla. to play in the MAC/Big East
Challenge.
