Men's Golf to Wrap up Fall at MAC/Big East Challenge
October 26 | Men's Golf
Akron, Ohio The Akron men's golf team
heads to Orlando, Fla., to take part in the MAC/Big East Challenge
tomorrow, a tournament in its third year which is organized and
hosted by Marquette.
This is the final event for Akron this fall, as the team caps a
six-event first-half. The tournament field consists of 10 teams,
three of which are from the MAC, and six come from the Big East.
Representing the MAC are Akron, Bowling Green and Ohio. Big East
schools participating are host Marquette, Cincinnati, DePaul,
Rutgers, Seton Hall, Villanova and USF.
The Zips come into the 56-hole event having captured their first
tournament victory of the fall at the Belmont Fall Shootout.
"After capturing our first win last week, I expect our team to have
a lot of confidence going into the MAC/Big East Challenge," said
head coach Nick Goetze. "We have a great chance to win in
Orlando. A successful run down there would put our ranking in good
position as we look toward the spring season. Making it to the NCAA
Regional play is a goal that is within our grasp and I know the
guys are excited about the possibility of taking the program to the
national stage after a close call in '07."
The Zips will send their normal five to the tournament relying on
the talents of seniors Colin Clemente and Ryan
Gutowski, junior Vaughn Snyder, sophomore Jacob
Patte and freshman Drew Davidson.
"Each of our players has become more disciplined on the course and
our performance at Belmont was a testament to their ability to play
patient, smart golf," said coach Goetze. "Colin's consistency
should continue to be a big help this week and if Drew can find his
stride from the beginning of the fall, I predict a successful
outing for the Zips."
The tournament will be held at Orange County National Golf Center.
Orange County National hosted the 2003 and the 2005 PGA Tour
Q-School Finals, and will host again in November. OCN is regarded
as one of the top golf facilities in the country.
The tournament concludes Sunday.
