Tennis Freshmen Pace Team At Queen City Invitational

CINCINNATI The University of Akron tennis team was paced by its two freshmen at this past weekend's Queen City Invitational, hosted by the University of Cincinnati and held at the Queen City Racquet Club.
Rookie Jeremie Benjamin advanced herself to the semifinal round of flight 4 singles, where she lost 6-0, 6-2 to eventual bracket champion Sam Kintzel from Bowling Green. Benjamin moved past Ashley Young from Miami (Ohio) 4-6, 4-1 ret. in the opening round of 16, then defeated Xavier's Annie Diedalis 6-1, 6-2 to move herself into the semis.
UA's other newcomer this season, Carolina Castro Cota, advanced to the consolation final of flight 2 singles, losing 1-6, 6-1, 11-9 to Xavier's Kaitlyn Zinn. Castro Cota topped Miami's Cara Wald 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 in the quarterfinal round, and then got the best of Xavier's Tifanie Treece 6-1, 6-1 in the semis. Castro Cota was defeated in the main draw round of 16 by Kennesaw State's Ayano Tanaka 6-2, 6-4.
Cota also teamed with senior Amy Sherlock in the first doubles flight, and the pair advanced to the semifinals before falling 8-5 to Ball State's Calderwood and Quist. In flight 2 doubles play, the UA pair of Kerry Langworthy and Tanyaradzwa Gombera also made it to the semifinals, losing 8-6 to Ball State's Hall and Pollack.
Akron competes in the Toledo Invitational hosted by the University of Toledo on Oct. 13-14.
