Zips Fall to Tenth Place after Round Two
October 08 | Men's Golf
Macon, GA.-Through two rounds of play at the
Brickyard Collegiate The University of Akron men's golf team is in
tenth place with round three to be played tomorrow.
After an impressive first round, the Zips struggled to find rhythm
in the second round shooting 595 (289-306) total strokes on the
par-72, 7,128 yard course.
"After a fast start during round one, which featured a barrage of
birdies from our players, we kept things together in the final
holes to finish off a respectable day at 289," said head coach Nick
Goetze. "We had a lot of offense from the beginning in this
event. However, day two was a grind. With the exception of Ryan
Gutowski's solid 69, everyone struggled early and never found
their rhythm."
The two seniors lead the Zips. Ryan
Gutowski is shooting 143 (74-69) strokes after the first
36-holes to remain one-under par. He is tied for 17th place
overall.
Last week's Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week, Colin
Clemente is tied for 40th shooting 147 (71-76) total
strokes.
Closely following is round one leader for the Zips, junior Vaughn
Snyder, who has a two-round total of 149 (70-79) strokes. He is
tied for 44th place.
Sophomore Jacob Patte shot 156 (74-82) strokes overall. He
is tied for 64th place overall after a tough second round.
Freshman Drew Davidson follows in 69th place shooting two
rounds of 75-83 (158).
"We need to put the disappointment of today behind us and post a
low score tomorrow," Goetze said. "It's our turn to catch a hot
round and pass some teams that caught us today."
A total of 13 teams are participating in the 54-hole tournament
including host Mercer, Georgia, Georgia Tech, South Carolina,
Eastern Michigan, Furman, Gonzaga, Hartford, Kennesaw State, Middle
Tennessee and Troy.
Round three begins tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
