Men's Golf Add Three for 08-09
November 29 | Men's Golf
-The University of Akron men's golf head coach Nick Goetze, recently announced the addition of
Steve Bednar, Scott
Landreth and Ryan Mason to the 2008-09 roster.
Bednar, the younger brother of current Zips baseball shortstop Phil
Bednar, brings a solid high school background with him to the
college level. During the fall of his senior season Bednar won the
Northeast Ohio Conference individual championship and was named the
NEO Conference Player of the Year among other honors.
"I'm very excited to have Bednar join us next year," said Goetze.
"As a local standout from Stow Munroe-Falls High School, Steve has
the makings of a very solid player. His physical size and strength
as well as a good technical foundation will pay big dividends in
the college game. In addition, I know Bednar's work ethic and
positive attitude will help him build on a nice high school career
and find success as a member of our team."
Landreth, hailing from St. Michael High School in Ontario, Canada
is a dominant Canadian player. He has participated in multiple
tournaments including the Tournament of Champions, the Canadian
Junior Boys Championship, the Ontario Junior Masters and the
American Junior Golf Association Tournament.
"Landreth is a great pick-up for us among the Canadian ranks," said
Goetze. "We were definitely looking to broaden our recruiting scope
this season and we feel that Scott was a perfect addition. His game
is solid across the board and he love's to practice. Scott's
natural talent paired with his strong desire to improve will
certainly give him a great chance to become a dominant player for
the Zips."
Rounding out the 08-09 freshmen class is Mason from Bridgeport High
School in Bridgeport, WV. As a sophomore, Mason was voted the
Big-10 Conference Co-Player of the Year and gained that title
individually as a junior.
"Mason was our first find during the fall recruiting process and I
was pleased that our search led to his door," said Goetze. "He has
an excellent experience base and several top finishes at the
national level which should give him a lot of confidence as an
incoming freshman. With a dynamic swing and a steady attitude, he
should be able to make an immediate impact in Akron."
