FirstEnergy Intercollegiate Tees Off On Saturday
April 26 | Men's Golf
The University of Akron golf team will welcome 16 other
teams to Firestone Country Club this weekend when it plays host to
the annual FirstEnergy Intercollegiate. The action will get
underway on Saturday at 8 a.m. EST with a shotgun start and
Sunday's final round is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
The Zips enter the weekend on a roll winning two-consecutive
tournaments and claiming MAC Golfer of the Week honors five times
this spring. Individually, Blake Sattler (New
Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia HS), Brad Wright (Cambridge,
Ohio/ Cambridge HS) and Colin Clemente (Hubbard,
Ohio/Hubbard HS) have all won medalist awards during the spring
season.
"We are playing very good golf right now," head coach Tom Porten
said. "I feel we have chance to win this event for the first time
in school history, but it won't be easy as we have a very
challenging group of teams coming in this weekend."
Joining the Zips on the par-72, 7,125 yard North Course include
Mid-American Conference foes Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern
Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois and Ohio. The
non-conference field is made up of Binghamton, UNC-Charlotte,
Cleveland State, Eastern Kentucky, George Washington, Georgetown,
Saint Bonaventure, Saint Joseph, Western Kentucky and Youngstown
State.
Ball State won last year's event with a three-round total of 854
(284-285-285) to finish 10-under par. The Cardinals' Patrick
Wilkes-Krier set a new tournament record with a mark of 201
(69-67-65) to finish 15-under par. His third-round 65 also tied for
the lowest single-round in tournament history.
Eastern Kentucky carded in 867 (298-284-285) swings and Kent state
followed with 872 (289-296-287) tallies to round out the top-three
finishers of 2006 14-team field. UA ended in seventh a score of 891
(308-295-288).
Current weather conditions for the weekend call for temperatures in
the low-to-mid 60s with a 40 percent chance of rain on Saturday,
while Sunday should be free of precipitation.
