May 01 | Men's Golf
AKRON, Ohio The University of Akron
men's golf team will be in search of its first Mid-American
Conference Championship when it tees off on Thursday against the
other eight league members.
Akron enters the 72-hole three-day event red hot finishing
in the top-five in six consecutive events, including victories at
the Wolf Run Intercollegiate (April 15-16) and Tri-Match against
Kent State and Miami (Ohio) (April 22). The Zips have also compiled
a 30-3 record against MAC foes this season.
"We have had good success against the league schools this season,"
head coach Tom Porten said. "If we continue to play our game
I feel we have a good chance of claiming the league title."
This year's championship is taking place at the Medallion Golf Club
in Westerville, Ohio the same course that played host to the
event in 2005. Current Zips Blake
Sattler, Ryan Gutowski, Colin
Clemente and Matt Considine all participated in the tournament
to help guide Akron to a sixth-place finish. Sattler carded in a
1-over total of 285 (76-71-69-69) to lead the squad.
As a team the Zips have earned MAC Golfer of the Week honors 10
times and have won four events both of which are school
records. Sattler and sophomore Brad
Wright are strong candidates for MAC Player of the Year honors,
ranking third and fourth in the conference in scoring average.
UA is coming off a second-place showing at the FirstEnergy
Intercollegiate as Eastern Kentucky edged the Zips by one
stroke.
The MAC Championship will get underway on Thursday morning with 36
holes and will conclude with single rounds on Friday and Saturday.
