May 11 | Women's Tennis
AKRON, Ohio With the 2006-07 academic year closing out, University of Akron tennis coach Jeffrey Wyshner recently announced that Amy Sherlock (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada/Sacred Heart HS) and Kerry Langworthy (Harare, Zimbabwe/Gateway HS) have been selected as the team's co-captains for the 2007-08 season.
This season as a junior, Sherlock tallied a team-best-tying 14-17 overall record in singles play (sophomore Alyssa Carlson also did so), including a team-best 10-12 mark against dual competition. She paired with sophomore Tanya Gombera to make up UA's No. 1 doubles team, and the duo put together a team-high 15-12 overall record and a 12-9 mark in dual play.
Langworthy utilized her redshirt season as a sophomore in 2006-07, after suffering an injury in the early part of the year. In singles play, she posted a 5-3 overall record and went 2-0 in dual play at the No. 4 position.
Akron finished the season 9-13 (0-8 Mid-American Conference) and
was eliminated in the first round of the conference tournament by
Northern Illinois. The Zips' nine victories was their most since
the 1998-99 squad won 14.
In other Zips tennis news, foreign exchange student Aude Percherin
(La Teste-de-Buch, France/Saint Elme HS/ESC Rennes School of
Business) has completed her course requirements and will be
returning to her home country of France after completing final
exams this week.
Percherin played a valuable role
for the Zips this season, providing Wyshner line-up options with
Langworthy and senior Jenna Larson missing time due to injury at
various points of the year. Percherin finished with a 4-2 record at
No. 6 singles and also joined forces with junior Laura Hemlepp (4-5) and sophomore Alyssa Carlson (0-6) at No. 3
doubles.
