Tennis' Larson Named Academic All-MAC
May 02 | Women's Tennis
CLEVELAND University of Akron senior Jenna Larson (Bismarck, N.D./Century HS) was one of 13 student-athletes named to the Women's Tennis Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, the league office announced on Wednesday. Voting for the award was conducted by faculty athletics representatives at each of the league's nine institutions that sponsor the sport.
This season's team captain, Larson is scheduled to graduate next week with a biology degree and was the recipient of the team's Director's Award at UA's annual All-Sports Banquet held last month. That award is given to one player on each team at the school that exhibits leadership and achievement both in and out of competition. Larson has maintained a 3.76 grade-point average in her undergraduate studies and will pursue a masters degree at University of North Dakota.
Larson sat out her sophomore season (2004-05) following rotator cuff surgery and battled a nagging back injury throughout much of this season. Highlights of her senior campaign on the court include placing third in the Flight 2 singles bracket at the Bowling Green Invitational on Sept. 17, along with compiling a 9-10 dual record at the No. 2 doubles position when teamed with sophomore Lindsey Berry (Dayton, Ohio/Northmont HS). Larson finished the season 9-17 overall (5-13 dual) in singles play at the No. 2 spot in the Zips' line-up.
The number of honorees on the
Academic All-MAC Team is either a predetermined amount for the
specific sport or 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever
is greater. Due to ties in the voting this year's squad was
expanded to 13.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has
excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete
must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in
at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
First-year students and junior college transfers in their first
year of residence are not eligible for the award.
