Zips Have Five Shot Lead Going Into Final Round

- Ryan Culbertson shot the
lowest round of the day with a 5-under 67 to help the University of
Akron men's golf team secure a five-stroke advantage for first
place over Eastern Michigan heading into the final round of the MAC
Championship.
The Zips matched their second-round total of 281 strokes on Friday
and have now tallied 844 (282-281-281) strokes to rest 20-under
par.
Culbertson's (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster HS) 5-under performance moved
him three spots up the leader board from sixth place to third as he
has amassed a three-round sum of 209 (72-70-69) to rest 7-under
par.
Sophomore Brad Wright (Cambridge,
Ohio/Cambridge) joins Culbertson in a tie for third after he posted
a 1-under 71 today to go along with back-to-back rounds of 3-under
69 on Thursday.
Junior Colin Clemente (Hubbard,
Ohio/Hubbard HS) rounds out the trio of Zips in the top-five as he
used a 2-under par 70 on Friday to accumulate a three-round total
of 211 (69-72-70/-5) and end the day in fifth place.
Competing in his final MAC Championship, senior Blake
Sattler (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia HS) sits tied
for ninth after carding in a 1-over 73 today. For the tournament he
is 1-under par with 215 (72-70-73) strokes.
Ryan Gutowski (Copley,
Ohio/Copley HS) matched Sattler's third-round 73 as he has now
fired off 220 (73-74-73) strokes over three rounds on the par-72,
7,216 yard Medallion Golf Club course to sit tied for 22nd.
The Eagles made a strong surge towards the top to cut the Zips
advantage from 10 strokes to five by taking 274 (-14) swings in
round three. Kent State (854=286-288-280/-10), Ball State
(862=284-284-289/-2) and Ohio (871=293-285-293/+7) complete the
top-five.
Graham Hill of EMU tallied a 5-under 67 on Friday to move into a
tie for first with Peter Ahn of Kent State with 208 (-8)
strokes.
