Tennis Signs Colombian Prospect
July 02 | Women's Tennis
AKRON, Ohio First-year University of Akron head tennis coach Jeffrey Wyshner announced on Monday that Carolina Castro (pronounced Caro-lee-nah) has signed a national letter of intent to play at the school beginning in the fall of 2007. Castro is a native of Bogata, Colombia.
"Carolina is an exceptionally talented tennis player who has successfully played high level tournament tennis in South America," Wyshner said. "It is particularly great to see the commitment she has made as a junior to her doubles play since this is so often overlooked before coming to college. Carolina will also be a great addition to our team and to Akron. Academically, she was intelligent enough to complete 8th and 9th grade in a single year, and she should adjust well to the University's academic demands. Within the team, her love of tennis and willingness to work hard to make herself better will fit right in"
Despite playing in just two tournaments that count for ranking purposes, Castro is ranked No. 21 in Colombia in the 16-23 age grouping. In 2006, she completed her eligibility in the Under-16 in Colombia with a ranking of No. 5 in singles and No. 3 in doubles, and also participated in three stages of the Confederation of South American Tennis tour reaching a high ranking of No. 11 in both singles and doubles.
Castro is Wyshner's second signee
for the 2007 season, as Jeremie Benjamin
(Indianapolis/North Central
HS) inked with UA in April.
