Berry, Cota Highlight Final Day Of BGSU Invitational

A victory in the consolation final of flight 2 doubles by
the pair of Lindsey Berry (Dayton, Ohio/Northmont HS) and Carolina Castro Cota (Bogota, Colombia/Ervid
Integral HS) highlighted Sunday's final day of competition for the
University of Akron tennis team at the BGSU Invitational. The
eight-team, two-day event was held at Bowling Green's new varsity
tennis complex and was not team scored.
Berry and Castro Cota topped Detroit's Aneta Maricevic and Erin
Weldon, 8-4. Castro Cota and Berry each advanced to the final round
of their respective consolation singles bracket as well, with
Castro Cota falling 6-3, 7-6 (3) to Detroit's Svetlana Flankova in
flight 2 and Berry losing 6-0, 6-1 to Bowling Green's Jenna
Nussbaum in Flight 7.
Zips freshman Jeremie Benjamin (Indianapolis, Ind./North
Central HS), who was the highlight of UA's play in the tournament's
opening day on Saturday, lost 6-3, 6-1 to Xavier's Jeanette Feider
in the flight 6 singles final. Benjamin was the only Akron player
to advance to a true championship match-up on Sunday.
UA's Kerry Langworthy (Harare, Zimbabwe/Gateway HS)
and Alyssa Carlson (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran
HS) each lost their singles consolation championship match. Playing
in flight 4, Langworthy lost 6-4, 6-3 to Bowling Green's Katia
Babina, while in flight 5 Carlson lost 6-3, 6-0 to Weldon.
Rounding out Sunday's results in doubles play, was a loss by the
team of Langworthy and Laura Hemlepp (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard
Davidson HS) in the flight 3 consolation final, 8-5, to Andrea
Volle and Libby Harrison of Bowling Green. In flight 1, Tanyaradzwa
Gombera (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior HS) and Amy
Sherlock (Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada/Sacred Heart HS) were
defeated in the second round of the winner's bracket by Xavier's
Kara Courtney and Tifanie Treece, 8-4.
Akron, which does not have a competition at home this fall, will
take part in the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State on Sept.
29-30.
