September 25 | Men's Golf
The University of Akron men's golf team battled more
tough weather conditions today finishing fourth at the Jim Colbert
Intercollegiate.
The Zips went into round three in fifth place only three strokes
behind Missouri State. However, a determined Akron team shot 302 in
the third round to surpass Missouri State for the fourth position.
The Zips finished the 54-hole tournament with a three round total
of 911 (314-295-302).
"During some of the worst weather of the event, our guys hung tough
and posted some solid numbers," first year head coach Nick
Goetze said. "Overall, we handled the difficult conditions and
a challenging course fairly well."
The leader for the Zips was senior Colin
Clemente who had a consistent three rounds shooting 224
(75-74-75) on the par-72, 7,525-yard course. He ended the
tournament tied for tenth.
"Colin's experience as a veteran helped him put together some
steady rounds in the wind and rain," Coach Goetze said.
Following up Clemente was freshman Drew
Davidson who finished the tournament in 16th place with a three
round total of 227 (79-73-75).
Sophomore Jacob Patte finished third for the Zips and 20th
overall with a three round total of 229 (79-73-77).
Playing in his first collegiate golf tournament was freshman Doug
Underwood who shot 81-75-84 for a total of 240. Underwood
finished 44th overall.
Rounding out Akron's scorecard was senior Ryan
Gutowski who shot rounds of 81-85-75 for a three round total of
241 and overall 46th place finish.
Miami (OH) won the tournament shooting scores of 287-296-292
totaling 875 for three rounds.
The Zips return to action Oct. 1 and 2 as they head to Loveland,
Ohio to play in the Xavier Invitational.
