Tennis Heads To Spartan Invitational at Michigan State
September 28 | Women's Tennis
The University of Akron tennis team resumes its fall
schedule this weekend in East Lansing, Mich., at the Spartan
Invitational, hosted by Michigan State. The tournament will consist
of eight flights and, along with Akron and Michigan State, will
include participants from Albany, Cincinnati, Cleveland State,
Detroit, Louisville, Morehead State and Toledo.
On Saturday, doubles will start at 8 a.m. EDT followed by singles
rounds at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., while Sunday will feature two
morning doubles rounds (8 and 9:30 a.m.) followed by singles at 2
p.m.
Akron was idle last week, but is in the midst of a very successful
fall campaign. At West Virginia's Martha Thorne Invitational (Sept.
7-9) the Zips advanced players to the championship round in three
flights one in singles play and two in doubles competition.
Then at the Bowling Green Invitational (Sept. 15-16), freshman Jeremie
Benjamin (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central HS) advanced to the
flight 6 singles final, while four other UA players made their way
into the consolation final of their respective singles bracket.
Competition at the Spartan Invite marks the start of a busy
three-week stretch for Akron, as it will be at the Queen City
Invitational (hosted by University of Cincinnati) on Oct. 5-7 and
the Toledo Invitational (hosted by University of Toledo) on Oct.
13-14. The Zips have no home events this fall.
