Tennis Posts 10-1 Record At Thorne Invite

The University of Akron women's tennis team opened the
fall portion of its season on Friday at the Martha Thorne
Invitational, hosted by the University of West Virginia. The Zips
finished day one with a 10-1 record. The event continues with the
semifinal round on Saturday and the championship round on
Sunday.
"I was really excited to see the freshmen play with so much spirit
and composure today," Akron head coach Jeffrey
Wyshner said. "They took their lead from the outstanding play
of the upperclassmen, and it led to a great start of the season.
We'll definitely be looking for a big day tomorrow when we have to
play our way into championship matches."
Here are the highlights of the day:
"A" Doubles"
Carolina Castro Cota and Lindsey Berry defeated University of
Charleston's No. 2 team 8-3 in the round of 16 and defeated
Morehead State's No. 1 team 8-4 to advance to the semifinals.
Castro Cota and Berry will play West Virginia's No. 1 team Saturday
at 9 a.m.
"A" Singles
Carolina Castro Cota won 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 over Lauren Delaney of
Morehead State to advance to the quarterfinals.
"B" Doubles
Jeremie Benjamin and Alyssa Carlson beat Morehead State's No. 4
doubles team, 8-2 to advance to the semifinals where they will play
West Virginia's No. 3 team Saturday at 9 a.m.
"B" Singles
Jeremie Benjamin won 6-2, 6-0 over Morehead State's Adriana
Espinosa to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals.
Other results:
"A" Singles - Tanyaradzwa Gombera advanced to the semifinals
with a 6-0, 6-2 win over C. Samoilov of University of
Charleston.
"A" Singles - Amy Sherlock lost to West Virginia State's No. 1
player Anna Baronayte, 6-2, 6-2.
"B" Singles - Kerry Langworthy defeated K. Klein of West
Virginia, 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals.
"B" Singles - Alyssa Carlson defeated M. Stewart of West
Virginia State, 6-1, 6-3 to advance to quarterfinals.
"C" Singles - Laura Hemlepp and Lindsey
Berry both had byes into the quarterfinals.
"A" Doubles - Tanyaradzwa Gombera and Amy
Sherlock defeated Morehead State's No. 2 team to advance to the
semifinals.
"B" Doubles - Kerry Langworthy and Laura
Hemlepp defeated Charleston's No. 3 doubles team, 8-3 to
advance to the semifinals.
