Harutyunyan And Baronayte Shine At Wildcat Invite

EVANSTON, Ill. The University of Akron
doubles team of freshman Zaruhi Harutyunyan and sophomore Anna
Baronayte advanced itself into the semifinals of Flight B
doubles with a pair of wins on Friday in day one of the Wildcat
Fall Invitational being hosted by Northwestern.
In round one, the Zips duo topped LSU's Nicole Kantor and Nicole
Smith 8-6 and in round two defeated a team made up of Illinois'
Christine Stromberg and Notre Dame's Katie Potts, 8-6. Semifinal
play continues at Vandy Christie Tennis Center on Saturday,
beginning at 10 a.m. EDT. The event concludes on Sunday.
Those two UA athletes are also competing in the singles portion of
competition at the Wildcat Invite, and each suffered three set
losses in day one. Harutyunyan fell 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 to Oklahoma's
Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Baronayte suffered a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1
defeat to Northwestern's Stacey Lee.
Also this weekend, the remainder of the Akron tennis team is
competing in the Fall Mid-American Conference Invitational at
Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. The highlights from Friday's first
day of competition included a pair of Zips doubles wins and one
victory in singles play.
Sophomore Jeremie Benjamin and senior Lindsey
Berry defeated the Buffalo pair of Diana Toia and Smaranda Stan
9-7 in the first round of Flight 2 doubles, while the UA team of
junior Kerry Langworthy and senior Alyssa
Carlson won their first match of Flight 4, 8-2, over Ball
State's Kimberly Robbins and Kristin McKinney. Benjamin posted UA's
only singles win on Friday, downing Ball State's Kylee Johnson 6-7
(5), 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round of Flight 5.
The Fall MAC Invitational continues through Sunday.
