Tennis Enjoys Successful Saturday

EVANSTON, Ill. With athletes competing at two different events, the University of Akron tennis team turned in several strong individual performances on Saturday paced by freshman Zara Harutyunyan and sophomore Anna Baronayte, who combined for a 4-1 record at the Wildcat Fall Invitational being hosted by Northwestern.
Both went 2-0 in singles play and advanced themselves to Sunday's consolation final in their respective flights. In Flight A singles, Harutyunyan defeated Michigan State's Stephanie Kebler 6-1, 6-2 and Wisconsin's Elizabeth Carpenter 6-2, 6-4. In Flight C singles, Baronayte scored a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win over Wisconsin's Emese Kardhordo and Minnesota's Jackie Sperling 6-4, 6-0. Harutyunyan and Baronayte teamed up in doubles play and fell 8-5 to Minnesota's Karina Chiarelli and Elena Kazakova in the Flight B semifinal round.
Meanwhile at the Fall Mid-American Conference Invitational being
held on the Western Michigan campus in Kalamazoo, the UA pair of
sophomore Jeremie Benjamin and senior Lindsey
Berry advanced to the finals of Flight Two doubles
falling 8-1 to WMU's Emily Dudzik and Amanda Moccia. Benjamin and
Berry topped Toledo's Ashley Frey and Nadia Zoubareva 8-4 in the
semifinal matchup.
UA claimed the title in Flight 4 doubles by default, after its team
of senior Alyssa Carlson and junior Kerry
Langworthy went 3-0 against the bracket. Langworthy also scored
a 6-3, 6-0 singles win over Ball State's Dena Boulieris in the
consolation bracket of Flight 4.
