Men's Golf Falls One to Finish Ninth at Xavier Inviational
October 14 | Men's Golf
-The University of Akron men's golf team concluded the Xavier
Invitational Tuesday in ninth place out of 20 teams carding a three
round score of 873 at the Oasis Golf Club.
After posting a 286 and 287 in rounds one and two, Akron struggled
to keep momentum throughout round three carding a 300 (+12).
"The final round was set up for a challenge and scoring for the
field was certainly higher today," said head coach Nick
Goetze. "We didn't have a good finish after a very solid round
one and two, but the guys did their best to hang in there and keep
grinding."
"Nevertheless, I am still very pleased with the progress that our
new freshmen are making," added Goetze. "We just need to get a
little better at closing things out when we are in position and
this will come with experience."
After ending day one in first for UA, true freshman Ryan
Mason (Bridgeport, WV/Bridgeport) maintained his position
carding three rounds of 72-71-75 (218) to finish in 31st place, his
highest finish ever as a collegiate athlete.
Senior David Addison (Stewarton, Scotland/Stewarton
Academy) made up some ground in round three posting a 73 after
starting the invitational shooting a 70, the lowest round of any
Zip in the tournament. Unable to keep the momentum, he carded a
4-over on the par-72, 6,921-yard course in round two ending day one
tied for 43rd. Addison made up nine spots in round three finishing
tied for 34th and second for Akron.
Freshman Tim Lew (Courtice, Ontario/Courtice Secondary)
maintained his 43rd spot from day one posting a 221 (75-71-75)
while freshman Scott Landreth (Stratford, Ontario/St. Michael)
and junior Jacob Patte (Oshawa, Ontario/Eastdale Collegiate)
struggled during the final 18 holes finishing tied for 52 and 57
after posting top-35 scores in day one. Landreth carded a 222
(72-73-77) while Addison posted a 223 (72-72-79).
Eastern Kentucky took home the tournament title (282-278-286, 846)
while Mike Van Sickle, of Marquette University, won the individual
medal (64-68-67, 199).
The team will take a week off before they travel to Las Cruces,
N.M., Oct. 27-28, to participate in the Herb Wimberly
Intercollegiate at the New Mexico State University Golf Club.
