Harutyunyan Crowned Big Green Invite Singles Champ
November 10 | Women's Tennis
HANOVER, N.H. The University of Akron
tennis team posted a 3-2 record in singles play on Sunday in the
third, and final, day of competition at the Big Green Invitational
at Dartmouth.
UA freshman Zara Harutyunyan was named the invitational's
singles champion, after finishing the weekend 3-0. On Sunday, she
defeated Dartmouth's Molly Scott 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1. Harutyunyan and
sophomore Anna Baronayte teamed up to play No. 1 doubles
throughout the weekend and were named the event's doubles champion,
posting a 3-0 record.
The Zips' other two singles victories on Sunday came courtesy of
Baronayte at No. 2 over Dartmouth's Ryan Reichel, 6-0, 6-2, and
senior Tanyaradzwa Gombera at No. 3 versus Dartmouth's
Shelley Carpeni, 6-4, 6-4. Gombera also finished the weekend 3-0
against singles competition.
Gombera's win on Sunday gives her 83 combined singles and doubles
wins (39 in singles, 44 in doubles). That number ranks her tied for
18th in that category with 2008 graduate Amy
Sherlock. When the Zips' schedule resumes in January, Gombera
will continue her pursuit of 100 wins, which no Akron player has
achieved since Leslie Wargo did so in 1997.
Akron next competes on Jan. 17-19 at the Johan Kriek Classic in
Fort Myers, Fla. (hosted by Florida Gulf Coast).
