Men's Golf Freshmen Class Ranked Second In Division I
November 12 | Men's Golf
AKRON, Ohio-The University of Akron men's golf freshmen class was recently rated as the second best recruiting class in NCAA Division I golf (through the fall season) according to Golfstat.com.
Ranked by relative strength in the division, Akron's freshmen
class impact rating was a 384.679 only behind Alabama
(612.17). San Diego State took the third place nod
with a 377.291 rating.
"In my second season with Akron Golf, I am excited to see our
recruiting efforts producing good results," said head coach Nick
Goetze. "With the graduation of seniors Colin
Clemente, Ryan Gutowski and Matt
Considine last spring, I knew we had to bring in a talented
class of freshmen to build for the future."
The fact that our freshmen class has earned the number two Golfstat impact ranking among all NCAA Division I golf programs serves as evidence that Akron is becoming a dominant contender in the MAC and is moving in the right direction from a national standpoint," added Goetze.
An outstanding collegiate start, three freshmen finished in the Zips top-five including Tim Lew (Courtice, Ontario/Courtice Secondary), Scott Landreth (Stratford, Ontario/St. Michael) and Ryan Mason (Bridgeport, WV/Bridgeport).
Easily heralded as one of the Zips top incoming classes in the history of the program, the UA newcomers finished with a 73.41 scoring average through five fall tournaments.
Lew led all Zips on the fall, finishing with a team-low 71.91
average. Lew also posted the highest finish of any player ending in
sixth at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate (Oct 27-28) carding
three rounds of 75-66-70 for a five-under, 211 finish. Lew's round
of 66 also marked the lowest round shot by a Zip during the
fall.
Landreth finished second on the Zips squad averaging 73.45 through
11 rounds with his best mark coming at the Hummingbird
Intercollegiate (Nov. 3-4) where he led UA to a third place finish,
Akron's highest mark of the fall season. Individually, Landreth
finished 11th carding two rounds of 70-73, 143 (+1).
Mason, the only freshman to compete in all five fall tournaments,
ended the season with a 74.86 scoring average with his best
performance coming at the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 13-14) where he
carded a two-over, 218 (72-71-75) to lead the Zips.
Rounding out Akron's freshmen class
was Steve Bednar who
competed in the Saint Mary's Invitational (Sept. 29-30) carding
three rounds of 87-83-77 (247).
The Zips will return to play Feb. 22-23 for the UCF Rio Pinar
Intercollegiate in Orlando, Fla.
