Tennis Falls To Toledo 7-0 In MAC Finale

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron
tennis team concluded its regular season on Saturday with a 7-0
loss to visiting Toledo in a Mid-American Conference match at
Springside Racquet and Fitness Club.
Akron (5-14, 0-8 MAC) hung tough in doubles play, but gave up the
early point. At No. 2, the Zips' team of Lindsey
Berry and Alyssa Carlson rallied from a 5-4 deficit before
losing 8-6, and at No. 3 the pair of Kerry
Langworthy and Jeremie Benjamin trailed 7-2 before falling
8-5. UA's Carolina Castro Cota and Tanyaradzwa
Gombera were partnered at No. 1 and lost 8-1.
Toledo (14-6, 5-3) claimed all six singles matches in straight
sets. Gombera lost her first set in the No. 1 flight 7-5 and the
second 6-0. At No. 5, Carlson dropped her first set 6-4 and the
second 6-2.
Prior to Saturday's contest, seniors Laura
Hemlepp and Amy Sherlock were honored. Hemlepp played an
exhibition singles match, losing 9-7 to Sarah Horning. Sherlock has been sidelined since the team's
spring break trip to California in March due to an injury to her
anterior cruciate ligament.
The MAC tournament runs April 24-27
in Buffalo, N.Y., and will be held
at the University at Buffalo's Ellicott Tennis
Center. The Zips, who will play as the ninth seed,
will face eighth-seeded Northern Illinois (3-13, 1-7) in Thursday's
first round at noon EDT. The winner will advance to Friday's
quarterfinal, where it will meet up with top-seeded Western
Michigan at 10 a.m.
