Zips Tied for Fifth After Day One

State College, Pa.-The University of Akron
men's golf team sits tied for fifth place after day one of the 32
Annual Rutherford Intercollegiate hosted by Penn State University
at the par-71, 7,202-yard Penn State Blue Course.
"After a solid first round in perfect weather conditions, we played
well in the afternoon as winds picked up," said head coach Nick
Goetze. "The guys are playing better and with rain predicted
tomorrow, we should have a good opportunity to make up some ground
on the lead teams."
Senior Ryan Gutowski leads the way for the Zips carding
one of his best performances to date. On the day Gutowski is
shooting two solid rounds of 71 (142) tying him for fourth place
overall.
Fellow senior Colin Clemente follows Gutowksi carding a two
round total of 149 (75-74) tied for 17th place. Participating in
his first tournament this spring and in third for Akron and T-29
overall is freshman Doug Underwood with a day one total of 151
(74-77).
Rounding out the Zips scorecard is freshman Drew
Davidson (155) and senior Matt
Considine (161).
The final 18 holes will be played tomorrow with participants teeing
off from holes #1 and #10 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Other teams participating include fellow Mid-American Conference
schools, Ball State, Bowling Green, Miami (Ohio) and Ohio along
with Binghamton, Francis Marion, Hartford, Richmond, St.
Bonaventure, Wright State and host school Penn State.
