Zips Finish Fourth at Rutherford Intercollegiate
April 20 | Men's Golf
State College, Pa.-The University of Akron men's golf team moved up one spot Sunday afternoon to finish the 32nd Annual Rutherford Intercollegiate in fourth place, the highest finish to date of the spring season, with the Zips carding three rounds of 295-300-312 (907) over the 54-hole tournament.
"The guys played in heavy rains and winds for most of the day and they did a great job," said head coach Nick Goetze. " A 77 or 78 was a solid score in these conditions and salvaging pars and bogeys was the goal. We will see a similar field next week at Kent so it was nice to gain some confidence here with a fourth place finish."
Shining for the Zips and finishing tied for fifth overall, his highest finish of the spring season, was senior Ryan Gutowski who led the Zips with a three round score of 222 (71-71-80) on the par-71, 7,202-yard Penn State Blue Course.
Known for his consistency and following closely behind Gutowski was fellow senior Colin Clemente who finished tied for eighth place overall carding three rounds of 75-74-75 (224).
Freshman Doug Underwood, competing in his second tournament of the year and first of the spring, finished third for UA and tied for 31st overall shooting 74-77-80 (231).
Concluding the tournament tied for 52nd and 54th respectively
was freshman Drew Davidson and senior Matt
Considine. Davidson carded three rounds of 75-80-82 (237) and
Considine finished shooting 83-78-77 (238) on the day.
Other teams participating included tournament winner and host school, Penn State University, fellow Mid-American Conference schools, Ball State, Bowling Green, Miami (Ohio) and Ohio along with Binghamton, Francis Marion, Hartford, Richmond, St. Bonaventure and Wright State.
The Zips will return to action next Saturday (April 26) for the
one day First Energy Invitational hosted by Kent State University
at the Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna, Ohio.
