April 27 | Men's Golf
Ravenna, Ohio-After finishing round one tied for second The University of Akron men's golf team finished the one day, two-round FirstEnergy Intercollegiate in fifth place Saturday posting team scores of 361-373 (734).
"We started out strong in the morning round and all of the guys
play fairly well," said head coach Nick
Goetze. "In particular freshman Doug
Underwood and sophomore Jacob
Patte shot even par 70's and really got our team in the hunt at
second place, however, the afternoon offered much tougher
conditions for the field as gusty winds and firmer greens made it
difficult to position approaches and salvage pars on the
greens."
Underwood carded the best finish of his collegiate career ending the tournament in first for Akron and tied for 11th place overall shooting two rounds of 70-74 (144). His solid performance was highlighted by a hole-in-one on hole 14 which was the same hole senior Matt Considine aced during the Zips practice round yesterday. Underwood's star studded day came in only his third tournament of the year.
Senior Colin Clemente came in second for UA and tied for 16th overall shooting two rounds of 72-74 (146). Both freshman Drew Davidson and Patte finished the tournament tied for 28th posting a 148. Davidson carded two rounds of 73-75 and Patte, who led the Zips after round one with a 70, struggled in the second round scoring 78. Finishing fifth for UA and tied for 37th overall was senior Ryan Gutowski who shot a 36-hole total of 150 (76-74).
Rounding out the Zips 6-man team and competing in his first ever
collegiate tournament was freshman Kevin
Pikus who posted a total score of 153 (77-76) at the par-70,
6,936-yard Windmill Lakes Golf Club.
Junior David Addison and Considine both competed in the
tournament as individuals. Addison finished alongside teammates
Davidson and Patte tied for 28th place carding two rounds of 73-75
and Considine finished the day with an identical score to Addison's
adding a stroke in the second round.
The event consisted of 12 teams including tournament host and winner, Kent State University, fellow Mid-American Conference schools, Bowling Green, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Ohio, and Toledo along with Cleveland State, Dayton, Oakland, Saint Francis, Youngstown State and the Junior National Team, RCGA.
The FirstEnergy Intercollegiate was the Zips last tournament before they will travel to Nashport, Ohio for the 2008 MAC Championships on May 2-4.
"Dropping to a fifth place finish was a little disappointing but
we know that we are capable of performing well at MAC's next week,"
concludes Goetze. "Finding consistency will be the key to our
success and I feel that we will have a team hungry to build on our
runner-up finish from last season."
