Tennis Names Captains For 2008-09 Season
May 29 | Women's Tennis
- University of Akron tennis coach Jeffrey
Wyshner announced on Thursday that Alyssa
Carlson (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran HS) and Kerry
Langworthy (Harare, Zimbabwe/Gateway HS) have been selected as
the team's co-captains for the 2008-09 season.
"I'd like to congratulate both Alyssa and Kerry on being selected
by their teammates as co-captains of next year's team," said
Wyshner, who prepares for his third season in charge of the
program. "Next season will be a critical one in the competitive
emergence of this program, and I think Alyssa and Kerry have the
work ethic and relationships with their teammates to play an
important leadership role on the squad."
Langworthy, who will be a redshirt-junior next season (earned a
medical redshirt in spring 2007 as a sophomore), also served as a
co-captain for the Zips in 2007-08. She is a member of the
athletics department's student-athlete advisory council and
represented UA at the NCAA National Student-Athlete Development
Conference held earlier this week in Orlando, Fla. Langworthy
compiled a 15-10 record in doubles play and went 11-18 versus
singles competition this season.
Carlson, who prepares for her senior campaign, teamed with junior
Tanyaradzwa Gombera to earn co-championship
honors in flight 3 doubles at the Toledo Invitational in October.
Her 10 doubles wins during the fall schedule were second most on
the team.
In other Zips tennis news, seniors Laura
Hemlepp and Amy Sherlock both completed their undergraduate
degrees earlier this month. Hemlepp wrapped up her studies in
biology and will remain in the area as she begins working on a
master's degree in nutrition at UA. Sherlock finished her finance
degree and will be returning home to Nova Scotia, Canada, with
plans to pursue a graduate business degree.
