MAC Standout Jakupcin Joins Tennis Staff
August 25 | Women's Tennis
Former Bowling Green standout Ashley Jakupcin has been
named an assistant coach for The University of Akron tennis
program, head coach Jeffrey Wyshner announced on Monday.
Jakupcin, who officially joined Wyshner's staff earlier this month,
graduated from Bowling Green in May 2007 with a degree in
psychology and is working toward a master's degree in marriage and
family counseling and therapy at Akron. Also an instructor and
general assistant at Towpath Tennis Center in Akron, she is
expected to complete her degree in 2010.
At Bowling Green, Jakupcin was one of the most decorated tennis
athletes in school history. A two-time team captain, she earned
All-Mid-American Conference recognition three times including being
named to the first team in 2007 only the second Falcon to
earn that honor in a decade. Her 77 career singles victories ranked
as third most in BGSU history, and her 131 career combined singles
and doubles wins placed her eighth on the school's all-time list.
Equally talented in the classroom, Jakupcin was a Phi Beta Kappa
inductee in April 2007 and graduated cum laude as well.
"We are very fortunate to have someone of Ashley's experience and
commitment joining our program this year," Wyshner said. "Not only
is she an exceptional tennis talent who also has extensive
experience as an instructor, but having been a highly successful
player in the MAC, she will be an invaluable asset to the players
in their pursuit of similar heights. I also feel that her academic
interest in psychology and counseling will help because she is very
approachable and should be able to help our players deal with the
on- and off-court pressures of being a collegiate tennis
player."
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Jakupcin is a graduate of Bishop Watterson
High School where she was a four-year letterwinner, two-time
all-state selection, and runner-up in the 2002 Division I state
championships. She was also ranked as high as 75th nationally in
the USTA juniors.
