Women?s Tennis Stands Strong At BGSU Invitational

Two University of Akron tennis players advanced
themselves to the championship round of their respective singles
flight, while four others moved themselves into the third place
match in their bracket on Saturday in the first day of the BGSU
Invitational, being held on the Bowling Green campus. The two-day,
nine-team event, which marks the start of the 2008-09 season for
the Zips, is not being team scored.
Freshman Zaruhi Harutyunyan will play for the title in
flight 1 on Sunday, after knocking off Cleveland State's Charlotte
Gibbons 6-0, 6-3 in the opening round and then defeating Xavier's
Kara Courtney 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. She will face off against
Cincinnati's Safiyya Ismail in the championship.
Sophomore Carolina Castro Cota will represent UA in
tomorrow's flight 4 championship. She downed Cincinnati's Elizabeth
Young 6-1, 7-6 (0) in first round play and then topped Xavier's
Jeanette Feider 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals. Castro Cota will face
BGSU's Katia Babina in the final.
Zips' sophomore Anna Baronayte (flight 2), senior Tanyaradzwa
Gombera (flight 3), junior Kerry
Langworthy (flight 5) and sophomore Jeremie
Benjamin (flight 7) will each play for a third place finish in
their bracket tomorrow. Akron senior Alyssa
Carlson will take on Detroit's Erin Weldon in the consolation
final of flight 6.
All four of UA's doubles teams won the opening round of their
flight Harutyunyan and Castro Cota in No. 1, Baronayte and
Gombera in No. 2, Benjamin and senior Lindsey
Berry in No. 3, and Carlson and Langworthy in No. 4.
Sunday's final day of competition is scheduled to get underway at 9
