Zips Sit Tenth After Day One, Addison Tied for Third
September 22 | Men's Golf
Kingston, R.I.-The University of Akron men's
golf team sits tied for tenth after day one at the 15th annual
Adams Cup of Newport/Cleveland Golf Classic hosted by the
University of Rhode Island at the Newport National Golf Club.
"Our morning play was relatively steady since this was the first
event for us this fall," said second year head coach Nick
Goetze. "However, we're going to need a solid day to make up
for the big numbers that we made in round two."
Akron shot 602 (298-302) strokes as a team led by senior David
Addison (Stewarton, Scotland/Stewarton Academy) who after
finishing round one tied for 14th moved up 11 spots to finish the
day three-under par-72 (73-68). Addison's second round score of 68
was his lowest 18-hole score since his freshman spring season in
2006 when he carded 70.
Freshman Scott Landreth (Ontario, Canada/St. Michael)
followed Addison who, playing in his first event as a collegiate
athlete, carded a one-over 145 (73-72) for the 13th spot. Fellow
freshman Ryan Mason (Bridgeport, WV/Bridgeport) sits in
third posting 155 (74-88) strokes on the day.
Junior Jacob Patte and sophomore Kevin
Pikus rounded out the Zips scorecard at the 7,244-yard course
tying for 66th and 74th overall.
"The ball striking was a bit loose for a few of the guys in the afternoon and this links style course is penalizing," said Goetze. "But if we can follow the lead of David and Scott I know we can put together a solid event."
Over the past 14 years, the Adams Cup of Newport has developed into one of the finest golf tournaments on the East Coast, annually attracting some of the top NCAA golf programs in the country. This year, the field is comprised of 16 teams from 11 different states and 13 conferences.
Texas A&M leads the tournament field carding 566 (286-280)
on the day.
Akron will play a third and final round Tuesday beginning at 8:00
a.m. Check GoZips.com for full results.
