Men's Golf Finishes Adams Cup Tied for Eleventh
September 23 | Men's Golf
.-Playing in the first event of the season, The University of
Akron men's golf team tied for 11th place Tuesday at the 15th
annual Adams Cup of Newport/Cleveland Golf Classic hosted by the
University of Rhode Island at the Newport National Golf Club.
After ending day one tied for 10th place, the Zips fell one spot
finishing the 54-hole, 16 team tournament with 914 (298-304-312)
strokes.
"Unfortunately we did not get anything going today," said head
coach Nick Goetze. "Although tougher pins and the wind
kept scoring higher for the entire field, errant shots and poor
putting kept us from making the birdies and par saves we
needed."
A bright spot in the event was senior David
Addison (Stewarton, Scotland/Stewarton Academy) who stepped up
for UA carding three rounds of 73-68-80 to finish tied for 11th
place overall, his highest collegiate finish ever. Adding to his
personal bests in the event, Addison's 221 (+5) was his lowest
three-round score to date while his second round score of 68 was
his lowest 18-hole score since entering college. His previous low
of 70 was obtained during his freshman spring season in 2006.
Freshman Scott Landreth (Ontario, Canada/St. Michael),
playing in his first collegiate event, placed second for UA and
tied for 16th out of the field of 83 posting 223 (73-72-78). Fellow
newcomer Ryan Mason (Bridgeport, WV/Bridgeport) finished
tied for 44th posting 231 (74-81-76) strokes on the event.
Ending tied for 69th was junior Jacob
Patte (Oshawa, Ontario/Eastdale Collegiate) who carded a three
round score of 239 (78-83-78) on the par-72, 7,244-yard course.
Rounding out the Zips scorecard was sophomore Kevin
Pikus (Strongsville, Ohio/Cleveland St. Ignatius) finishing
tied for 81st posting 246 (79-83-84) strokes.
Akron will continue tournament play next Monday and Tuesday in
Pebble Beach, Calif. at the St. Mary's College Invitational.
"With our event at Pebble beach coming up this weekend we certainly
need to regroup and find a way to put together a good performance
in California," said Goetze. "Fortunately our freshmen, Ryan and
Scott, and David produced several good rounds. Their solid play
will give us some well-needed confidence as we prepare for the
upcoming weekend."
Texas A&M took home the tournament title carding 856 as a team
while Aggie Bronson Burgoon was the individual winner posting a
204.
