Tennis Travels To Spartan Invitational

Following a stellar opening week of the season, The
University of Akron tennis team travels to East Lansing, Mich.,
this weekend to participate in the 19th annual Spartan
Invitational. The eight-team event will be held Saturday and Sunday
on the Michigan State campus, with matches getting underway at 8
a.m. EDT both days at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Facility.
Along with Akron and Michigan State, the tournament will include
participants from Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Detroit,
Louisville, Marshall and Toledo. Each will face three opponents in
singles and three opponents in doubles in a flighted round robin
format.
The Zips are scheduled to face Louisville (doubles), Marshall
(singles) and Toledo (singles) on Saturday; and Michigan State
(doubles), Bowling Green (doubles) and Detroit (singles) on Sunday.

Last weekend at the Bowling Green Invitational, Akron freshman Zaruhi
Harutyunyan and sophomore Carolina
Castro Cota claimed the championship in their respective
singles flight and teamed up to win flight 1 doubles.
Harutyunyan defeated Cincinnati's Safiyya Ismail 6-1, 6-0 in the
flight 1 singles finale. Throughout the two-day event she lost only
four games. Castro Cota tallied a three-set victory in the flight 4
singles championship, defeating BGSU's Katia Babina 1-6, 6-1, 7-6
(2). Later, Harutyunyan and Castro Cota topped Detroit's Annie
Moore and Zelika Minic 8-2 in the flight 1 doubles title
match-up.
Two other UA athletes posted third-place finishes in their singles
bracket at the BGSU Invite, with sophomore Anna
Baronayte doing so in flight 2 and senior Tanyaradzwa
Gombera performing the feat in flight 3. Baronayte and Gombera
joined forces to finish third in flight 2 doubles play, as did the
Zips' pair of sophomore Jeremie Benjamin and senior Lindsey
Berry in flight 3. Akron senior Alyssa
Carlson and junior Kerry Langworthy were runners-up in the
flight 4 doubles bracket.
