Tennis Completes Day One Of Spartan Invitational

– The University of Akron tennis team notched a pair of
doubles victories to go with two wins in singles play on Saturday
in the first day of the 19th annual Spartan Invitational at
Michigan State. The eight-team event is not being team scored and
is set up in a flighted round robin format.
Akron opened the day by facing off with Louisville in doubles
competition, where the Zips' duo of sophomore Jeremie
Benjamin and senior Lindsey Berry topped Lauren Imre and Amelia
Harris 8-6; while the UA pair of senior Alyssa
Carlson and junior Kerry Langworthy bested Gabrielle Duncan
and Oksana Kuyso, 8-0.
The Zips' singles wins came courtesy of freshman Zaruhi
Harutyunyan and Benjamin versus Toledo. Harutyunyan defeated
Martina Wodzinski 6-2, 6-0 and Benjamin downed Melissa Reynolds
6-4, 7-5. Earlier in the day, Harutyunyan suffered a 7-5, 7-5
singles loss to Marshall's Kellie Schmitt, who is ranked No. 42 in
the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason
rankings.
UA gave up four three-set singles losses, with sophomore Anna
Baronayte falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to Marshall's Karolina Soor and
4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4) to Toledo's Ashley Frey, senior Tanyaradzwa
Gombera giving up a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 decision to Toledo's Maha
Guirguis, and Langworthy losing 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 to Toledo's Jessica
Azoulay.
The Spartan Invitational continues on Sunday at 8 a.m. EDT. Akron
is scheduled to face Michigan State and Bowling Green in doubles
and Detroit in singles.
