Tennis Posts Seven Wins In Last Day Of Spartan Invitational

. – The University of Akron tennis team scored three
victories in doubles play and notched another four wins in singles
competition in the final day of the 19th annual Spartan
Invitational at Michigan State. The event was not team scored.
In doubles play versus fellow Mid-American Conference member
Bowling Green, the UA pair of freshman Zaruhi
Harutyunyan and sophomore Carolina
Castro Cota topped Christine Chiricosta and Kelsey Jakupcin
8-5, while the Zips duo of sophomore Anna
Baronayte and Tanyaradzwa Gombera got the best of Katia Babina
and Sam Kintzel, 8-1. UA sophomore Jeremie
Benjamin and senior Lindsey Berry defeated Stefanie Menoff and
Libby Harrison 8-5 as well.
In singles play against Detroit, Harutyunyan defeated Zeljka Minic
6-2, 6-1, Baronayte downed Annie Moore 6-3, 6-1, Gombera bested
Svetlana Flankova 6-2, 6-3 and senior Alyssa
Carlson topped Kelly Davis 6-2, 6-2.
The Zips also matched up with Michigan State in doubles play,
losing all four contests.
Akron will be idle until Oct. 10-12 when it is scheduled to send
athletes to both the Wildcat Invitational at Northwestern and the
MAC Invitational at Western Michigan.
