Men's Golf in Tenth Place at Saint Mary's Invitational
September 30 | Men's Golf
Pebble Beach, Calif.-After two rounds of play, The University of Akron men's golf team holds steady in tenth place Monday at the Saint Mary's College Invitational at the Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif.
Playing with a squad of four freshman and one senior, the Zips carded a 301 through the first 18-holes on the par-71, 6,639-yard course. Working off the nerves in round two, UA shaved 13 strokes off its second round score shooting a 288.
A big part of the second round improvement came from true
freshman Scott Landreth (Ontario, Canada/St. Michael) who
after struggling through the first 18, finishing with a 78, came
back strong in round two carding a team low 69, tying him for 29th
place.
On the day, the Zips were led by newcomer Ryan Mason (Bridgeport, WV/Bridgeport) who sits tied for 18th place after firing a 3-over 145 (73-72).
Following closely behind Mason and tied for 20th is fellow
newcomer Tim Lew (Courtice, Ontario/Courtice Secondary)
who, competing in his first collegiate tournament, carded a 146
(+4, 74-72).
Senior David Addison (Stewarton, Scotland/Stewarton Academy) and freshman Steve Bednar (Stow, Ohio/Stow) round out the Zips scorecard shooting a 151 and 170 on the day.
"I'm pleased that our freshmen have continued to put together some very nice rounds for our team," said head coach Nick Goetze. "Ryan and Scott have kept our rhythm from Rhode Island and Tim has really showed his potential this week as well. Combined with David's steady scoring, we've got a great chance to make a move up the leaderboard tomorrow.
We've certainly been prone to some errant play this season with
such a young team, but our young guys have certainly shown that
they have the ability to help take our team in the right
direction."
The 16-team, 92-player tournament includes fellow Mid-American Conference school, Miami (Ohio), CS Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, San Francisco, Gonzaga, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Texas-Arlington and Wisconsin.
The Zips will play the third and final round on Tuesday with a shotgun start beginning at 7:30 a.m. (PST).
