Zips Finish Eleventh at Saint Mary's College Invitational
September 30 | Men's Golf
Pebble Beach, Calif.-Behind a squad of four
freshmen and one senior, The University of Akron men's golf team
carded three rounds of 301-288-294 (883) on Tuesday to wrap up the
Saint Mary's College Invitational in eleventh place.
"Although we didn't keep our momentum going after a solid start
today, the guys did their best to hang in and grind out the round,"
said head coach Nick Goetze. "Eleventh place in not where we
wanted to be, but each player on our roster has shown that they can
produce the results we need to improve as a team."
Shining in his opening tournament and moving up nine spots from his
day one finish was true freshman Tim Lew
(Courtice, Ontario/Courtice Secondary) who finished tied for 11th.
Leading the team, Lew carded a 2-over 215 (74-72-69) on the
day.
"Tim had a great tournament and showed a lost of poise in his first
start as a freshman," said Goetze. "He's a very technically sound
player with a lot of creativity around the greens and I know he'll
be a big part of our success throughout the year."
Fellow freshman Scott Landreth (Ontario, Canada/St. Michael) came
in second for UA firing off three rounds of 78-69-73 (220) tying
him for 35th place on the par-71, 6,639-yard course.
After leading the team yesterday with rounds of 73 and 72, freshman
Ryan
Mason (Bridgeport, WV/Bridgeport) struggled through the final
18 shooting a third round score of 78 dropping him into a tie for
the 50th spot at the 16-team, 92-player tournament.
Senior David Addison (Stewarton, Scotland/Stewarton
Academy) and freshman Steve Bednar (Stow, Ohio/Stow) rounded out
the Zips scorecard shooting a 226 and 247 on the day.
The University of San Francisco took home the team victory while
USF's Domingo Jojola claimed the individual medal.
The Zips will take a week off before they travel to Loveland, Ohio
to continue fall play at the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 13-14).
