Men's Golf Steady After Day One At Firestone

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's golf team posted a steady 296 in rounds one and two Monday at the Firestone Invitational which puts the Zips in a tie for fifth heading into round three.
Fellow Mid-American Conference school Eastern Michigan leads the eleven team tournament carding a even 567 (283-293) on the par-72, 7,060-yard world renowned Firestone Country Club North Course. Individually, Western Carolina's Ricky Stout is at the helm of the 68-player field carding a five-under 139 (69-70).
For Akron, freshman Cameron Simmons leads the Zips carding two rounds of 73 after posting four birdies throughout the day. His 176 strokes tie him for 13th overall. Fellow UA newcomer, junior transfer Lucas Murray, also matched his play in both rounds scoring a 74 (148) for a 24th place tie.
Sophomores Scott Landreth and Ryan Mason each carded a 149 during day one of the two-day, 56-hole tournament scoring rounds of 74 and 75 for a 30th place mark.
Senior Jacob Patte rounds out Akron's scorecard posting a 78 and 79 (157).
Individually, Akron had four individual competitors in the event led by junior Doug Underwood who sits in a tie for 24th (71-77). Freshman Peter Meeks carded a 156 followed by sophomore Steve Bednar and junior Drew Davidson who posted a 158 and 159.
Also playing in Akron's home tournament, the first since 2007, are Kansas State, Kentucky, Marquette, Maryland, Michigan State, Pacific, Rhode Island and St. Mary's College.
Round three of the event will tee off from holes one and ten beginning Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
